Polite speech: würde, hätte, könnte

In German, the subjunctive II (Konjunktiv II) is used for polite requests, desires, and advice. In A2, you will learn these set phrases: Ich hätte gern (I would like), Könnten Sie...? (Could you...?), Würden Sie...? (Would you...?), Du solltest (You should). Also for hypothetical and unreal situations: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich... (If I had time, I would...).

In this lesson

1. Polite request

Ich hätte gern / Ich würde gern.

Ich hätte gern ein Kilo Äpfel.
I would like a kilo of apples, please.
2. Polite asking

Könnten Sie...? / Würden Sie...?

Könnten Sie mir helfen?
Could you help me?
3. Advice

Du solltest + infinitive.

Du solltest zum Arzt gehen.
You should go to the doctor.
4. Hypothetical

Wenn ich ... hätte / wäre, würde ich ...

Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen.
If I were rich, I would travel.
5. Forms

würde, hätte, wäre, könnte, sollte (ich = er)

💡 In shops, restaurants, or official offices, use möchte / hätte gern / könnten Sie. 'Ich will' and direct imperative sentences sound rude in German.
