Past Tense of Modal Verbs and 'sollen'

The past tense of modal verbs is expressed using the Präteritum (simple past) in conversation, not the Perfekt: 'Ich musste arbeiten' (I had to work). The rule is simple: the umlaut is dropped, and '-te-' is added. Also, this lesson introduces a new modal verb: sollen, which is used for requests from others or for giving advice.

In this lesson

1. Structure

The umlaut is dropped + -te-: können → konnte, müssen → musste.

Ich konnte nicht kommen.
I couldn't come.
2. Endings

ich -te, du -test, er -te, wir -ten, ihr -tet, sie -ten. ich = er.

3. möchten → wollte

möchten has no past tense form, use wollte instead.

Ich wollte dich anrufen.
I wanted to call you.
4. sollen

Used for someone else's request or advice: 'I am supposed to / I should'.

Der Arzt sagt, ich soll mehr schlafen.
The doctor says I should sleep more.
💡 In conversation, always use 'Ich musste arbeiten' instead of 'Ich habe arbeiten müssen'. The Präteritum for modal verbs is both easy and natural.
