Purpose: um ... zu, damit, ohne ... zu, statt ... zu

In German, there are two main ways to express the purpose of an action: um ... zu and damit. Both translate to 'to' or 'so that'. The choice depends on the subject: if both clauses share the same subject, use um ... zu. If the subjects are different, use damit. Similarly, ohne ... zu (-without doing something) and statt ... zu (-instead of doing something) follow the same pattern with infinitive clauses.

In this lesson

1. um ... zu

Same subject: -to / in order to.

Ich lerne Deutsch, um hier zu arbeiten.
I am learning German to work here.
2. damit

Different subjects: so that. Verb goes to the end.

Ich spreche langsam, damit du mich verstehst.
I am speaking slowly so that you understand me.
3. ohne ... zu

without doing something.

Er ging, ohne Tschüss zu sagen.
He left without saying goodbye.
4. statt ... zu

instead of doing something.

Statt zu lernen, sieht er fern.
Instead of studying, he is watching TV.
5. wozu? / warum?

Asking for purpose: Wozu? (what for?). Asking for reason: Warum? → weil.

💡 Check the subjects in both parts of the sentence: same person → um ... zu. Different people → damit.
