Past Perfect (Plusquamperfekt) and nachdem

When describing two events in the past, use the Plusquamperfekt for the action that happened earlier: 'Ich hatte schon gegessen, als er kam' (I had already eaten when he came). The structure is the same as the Perfekt, but the helping verb (haben/sein) is in the past: hatte / war. It is most commonly used with 'nachdem' (after) clauses.

In this lesson

1. Structure

hatte / war + Partizip II.

Ich hatte schon gegessen.
I had already eaten.
2. When to use?

For an action that happened before another past event.

3. haben or sein?

The same rules as the Perfekt apply: gehen → war gegangen, essen → hatte gegessen.

4. nachdem

Means 'after'. The subordinate clause uses Plusquamperfekt, and the main clause uses Präteritum/Perfekt.

Nachdem er gegessen hatte, ging er schlafen.
After he had eaten, he went to sleep.
💡 Think of it like the English 'had done' (e.g., had gone, had eaten). The logic works very similarly.
